'Supercell' Storm Brings Lightning and Hail to Sydney Suburbs

Severe hail and wind, as well as thunder and lightning, battered parts of New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory on January 20 as storms swept across the region.

Two storms, described as “supercells” by the Bureau of Meteorology, hit the suburbs of north and south of Sydney, bringing severe wind, giant hail and thunder and lightning to the area.

Video posted by a Sutherland resident shows a lightning strike, followed by a heavy downpour of rain and hail that brought down a number of trees.
