Supergirl's season four finale will bring back Lex Luthor, while also including a nod to the movies.

The DC villain is being portrayed in the CW series by Jon Cryer, who played the character's nephew Lenny in the critically panned Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

And, speaking to IGN, Supergirl co-showrunner Jessica Queller revealed that Cryer will be "a major player throughout the back half of season four, right through the finale".

Queller's fellow Supergirl co-showrunner Robert Rovner also revealed that the finale of the fourth season will be titled 'The Quest for Peace', in a nod to the previous Superman movie.

Speaking to Vulture, Cryer himself confirmed that Lex Luthor will appear in three Supergirl episodes in total in the fourth season.

"I've shot two, and then I'm doing the big season finale," Cryer said.

Cryer also confirmed that, despite the title of the finale, Superman won't appear in Supergirl to face Lex Luthor just yet – and that showrunners want him back for a fifth season.

Supergirl airs on The CW in the US and Sky One in the UK.
