Supergirl star explains that big season 3 twist

From Digital Spy

Warning! This article contains spoilers for season three of Supergirl.

We're used to series throwing devastating game-changing twists at us, but the reveal that Kara Zor-El's mum is actually alive was a pleasant – if not slightly baffling – surprise.

The return of Alura Zor-El to Supergirl was revealed in set photos from season three's finale 'Supergirl Returns' earlier this month, but fans were unsure whether Alura was simply back as another kind-of-heartbreaking hologram.

Thankfully, Alura is very much alive – and actress Erica Durance has been on hand to explain how and why that's even possible.

Chatting to TVLine ahead of her character's return next week, Erica revealed that Alura survived the explosion of Krypton thanks to a mysterious 'black rock' protecting Argo City.

On the bubble covering Argo City, the actress said: "Well, I don't know if you hit anything if you touch it, but the one person that tried to get out died on the other side. So, we stay in this beautiful bubble, isolated.

"And of course that's why we can't communicate and [Kara] didn't pick up on us."

Teasing the "pure joy and surprise" of Alura and Kara's reunion, Erica added: "[There's] the unfolding of why Supergirl has come to see her mother and 'Can her mother help her?'

"It's kind of touch and go as to whether Alura can actually do anything to help. Supergirl has to plead her case."

Supergirl airs on The CW in the US. The show airs on Sky One and Now TV in the UK.
