Last month, Supernatural fans got the news they've been waiting a decade for – that Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be returning as Dean and Sam's father John Winchester.

The Walking Dead star will appear in the show's 300th episode, titled 'Lebanon', which will air on Thursday, February 7 on The CW.

Now, more details about how John will make his return have been revealed by co-showrunner Andrew Dabb in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Speaking about how Sam and Dean are reunited with their father, Dabb said: “Our guys are put in a position where they essentially can have a wish granted.

“They’re actually expecting something else, but [John’s return] comes from a place of want by Dean. The need for closure is really what brings John back into their lives.”

But John doesn't return alone, as this altered reality also brings the return of the angel Zachariah (Kurt Fuller).

Morgan had wanted to return to the show for years, but was waiting for the right way to bring John back.

“The relationships between these three men were so open, so if I was going to come back, it would be nice to have some closure, especially with Sammy,” he said.

And it looks as if Morgan will also be getting his wish granted, as both brothers will be getting time alone with their dad before the episode ends.

“This episode gives Sam a chance to forgive,” Jared Padalecki, who plays Sam, said.

His on-screen brother Jensen Ackles added: “For Dean, the whole episode is a dream that he doesn’t want to wake up from. But he knows he has to.”

Supernatural season 14 continues Thursdays on The CW. The series airs on E4 in the UK.
