Supernatural just set up its final season with apocalyptic finale
Note: This article contains major spoilers about the Supernatural season 14 finale 'Moriah', which has yet to air in the UK.
Supernatural has thrown the ultimate challenge at Dean and Sam Winchester ahead of the final season.
Earlier this year, Jensen Ackles (Dean), Jared Padalecki (Sam), and Misha Collins (Castiel) revealed to fans that season 15 would be the show's last, and season 14's finale set things up by bringing about the apocalypse in dramatic fashion.
The episode, titled 'Moriah', built up to Dean preparing to kill Jack (Alexander Calvert). But when Dean has a change of heart and backs down, Chuck / God (Rob Benedict) has a strange reaction.
"This isn't how the story's supposed to end!" he said.
That raised alarm bells for Sam, who realises that Chuck has been playing them this entire time. He sees them as entertainment, a story, for his own amusement.
"Sam's right," Dean added. "The apocalypse, the first go-around with Lucifer and Michael, you knew everything that was going on."
Sam said: "Everything bad we've been killing and dying over, where were you? You're sitting back and watching us suffer? So we can do this over and over and over again? Fighting and losing people we love? When does it end? Tell me."
"We're done talking," Dean said. "Because this, this isn't just a story. It's our lives. So God or no God, you can go to hell."
Chuck responded by snapping his fingers and killing Jack.
Dean and Sam decided to attack Chuck, with Sam shooting Chuck in the shoulder. That last bit did not go down well with God.
"Fine. If that's the way you want it? The story's over," he said. "Welcome to the end."
Chuck disappears and the place turns dark, as Dean, Sam, and Cas witness the apocalypse happening. Souls from hell, as Cas explains to the brothers, are unleashed onto the earth once more, including callbacks from enemies the Winchesters faced and defeated in the first couple of seasons including Bloody Mary and – from the very first episode – the Woman in White.
So not only will the Winchesters go up against God in the final season, but it seems there will be plenty of nostalgia as they are confronted with monsters of the past.
And although Jack died, his story may not be over just yet. He woke up confused in The Empty and is approached by Billie.
Supernatural airs on The CW in the UK and on E4 in the UK.
