Superstore, the comedy series starring starring Ugly Betty's America Ferrera, came to an end with the finale of season six last week. But this is the modern TV industry, so a spin-off focusing on characters Bo and Cheyenne has already been announced.
...Well, it seemed that way anyway. On March 25, star/producer Ben Feldman and showrunners Jonathan Green and Gabe Miller told TVLine that they weren't working on it, but others were working on a script.
However, a day later, Bridget Kyle, who was writing the scripts, told Cleveland.com that the plug had been pulled.
"Unfortunately," she said, "yesterday NBC notified us that they're not going forward with the Superstore spinoff. So, it will just have to live on in our hearts and on my hard drive."
Is there a chance for any sort of spin-off for the show? Feldman isn't so sure that he himself would do one, stating: "Some shows do a revival for, like, an episode, which would be great. But an entire series of Jonah? No. I think I've done enough...
"We’re at a place in history where a relatively privileged, foot-in-mouth, bumbling middle-aged white guy is not necessarily the show anybody wants to watch any more, and I’m happy to not be that."
Looking at the legacy of the show, Green and Miller respectively said that they think the show is "a snapshot of the times" and showing "low-wage workers finding respect and dignity in their work".
Superstore aired on NBC in the US, and will air on ITV2 later in the year in the UK. Netflix UK has the first five seasons.
