Suranne Jones' drama Gentleman Jack is coming to US screens before its UK premiere.

The Doctor Foster star's new show will premiere this evening (Monday, April 22) on HBO in the US, ahead of its BBC One airing in the UK.

The drama series, written and directed by Happy Valley's Sally Wainwright, is a co-production between HBO and the BBC.

Gentleman Jack stars Jones as the remarkable Anne Lister, a noted 19th century landowner and industrialist.

A determined entrepreneur and diarist, Anne challenged the men of her time with her power and intellect, breaking society's limited expectations about women, gender rights and sexual identity.

"As you're playing her, you're aware that everybody has a right to be who they are, regardless of sexuality," Jones previously told Digital Spy and other media speaking at a panel with Sally.

"And it's so uplifting – I've done a lot of shows that are quite dark... Doctor Foster was about betrayal and that sticky stuff within a marriage. Save Me and Frozen were about paedophilia and losing a child, which are very dark subjects that we're drawn to."

The series also stars Peaky Blinders' Sophie Rundle – who will play Ann Walker, Anne Lister's love interest – and Game of Thrones' Gemma Whelan.

The rest of the stellar cast includes Timothy West, Gemma Jones, Doctor Who's Peter Davison, Amelia Bullmore, Vincent Franklin, Shaun Dooley, Fortitude actress Sofie Gråbøl and Katherine Kelly.

Gentleman Jack is set to air on HBO in the US on Monday, April 22. An airdate in the UK is yet to be announced, but the show will air on BBC One.
