The BBC is wasting no time in revealing the fate of Suranne Jones's period drama Gentleman Jack.

Mere days after the programme premiered on BBC One last weekend, the Beeb has confirmed that Happy Valley and Scott & Bailey writer Sally Wainwright's latest show will be back for a second series.

It's no surprise that the BBC moved quickly to order more of Gentleman Jack, since it debuted to an overnight audience of 5.1 million viewers and rave reviews.

Much like the first season, eight all-new episodes will be based on the real diaries of 17th century industrialist Anne Lister, who used code to describe sexual liberation that was rare for the time.

"I’m so thrilled that I will be joining Sally Wainwright on the second part of Anne’s journey," Suranne Jones said today (May 23).

"We always dreamed there would be more and now we get to play it all out. A huge thank you to the BBC, [US broadcaster] HBO and Lookout Point for giving us our second series.

"It’s such amazing and positive news. I love working with the brilliant and talented Sophie Rundle and can’t wait to create some more Lister and Walker moments with her too.”

Her writer Sally Wainwright added: "It's so exciting that so many people have had such a positive response to Suranne's exuberant performance as the brilliant, life-affirming Anne Lister and to Sophie's beautiful performance as her courageous partner, Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle).

"I'm utterly delighted that we've been recommissioned, because there are so many more big, bold stories to tell about Anne Lister and Ann Walker. A massive thank you to the BBC and HBO and to everyone at Lookout Point."

While fans will surely be excited to have more Gentleman Jack on the way, Suranne Jones recently admitted that she'd be "frightened" to return to her other hit show, Doctor Foster.

Gentleman Jack continues on Sunday (May 26) at 9pm on BBC One. HBO airs the show in the US.
