The US Coast Guard flew a 37-year-old surfer to hospital on Saturday, December 21, after he was bitten on the leg by an “unknown shark type” near Santa Rosa Island in California.
Authorities were alerted by the crew of a boat that had picked up the surfer and applied a tourniquet to his leg. The man was reported to be in a stable condition.
“This was the best possible outcome to a truly terrifying situation,” said Lt Benjamin McIntyre-Coble, the Coast Guard Sector-Los Angeles Long Beach command duty officer. “This individual was fortunate to be with a buddy who was able to communicate their position to the Coast Guard. We are all happy that he will be able to be with his family in time for the holidays.” Credit: USCG Los Angeles via Storyful
