A hero surgeon needed hospital treatment himself after performing four consecutive lifesaving surgeries for 12 hours without a break.

Doctor Chen Lianhua started his shift at 7am and completed a string of vital procedures without stopping before exhaustion got the better of him.

The determined doctor finished his shift 12 hours later at 7pm at West China Hospital in Sichuan Province, but collapsed at work minutes later.

Dr Lianhua had been eating his dinner - his only meal of the day - when he fell to the floor and had to be admitted as a patient himself.

Dr Lianhua's colleagues carried him to a bed and gave him an intravenous drip to improve his glucose levels. After recovering he was sent home to rest.

After a picture of the doctor emerged on social media, posters were quick to praise his dedication to the job.

One Chinese commenter, Lin Liu, said: 'What a fantastic doctor. He is my hero and deserves a medal. He worked himself to the point of exhaustion in order to keep saving lives.'

Another, Chan Yuan, added: 'We need more doctors like him. He is dedicated and worried about his patients.

'He carried on because he knew they needed surgery urgently and he didn't want to let anyone down. He deserves to be praised for his wonderful efforts.'
