Surging Floodwater Opens Chasm in California Road

Torrential rain caused a chasm to open in a road in California’s San Jacinto mountain ranges on Thursday, February 14.

Heavy rain pounded the state’s south on Wednesday night and into Thursday, creating dangerous driving conditions on streets and freeways, reported CBS

This footage shows water pouring off the edge of the chasm on State Route 243 between Banning and Bay Tree Springs. The California Department of Transport said maintenance crews were on site and the road was closed.

Some residents in mountain communities including Idyllwild, Mountain Center and Pine Cove were cut off from civilization as a result of the road closure, KTLA reported. Credit: Caltrans District 8 via Storyful
