Surging Floodwaters Bring Down Bridge in New Zealand's South Island

The Waiho River Bridge, near Franz Josef, New Zealand, was no match for floodwaters that caused the structure to crumble, as seen in this video from Tuesday, March 26.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds had battered the region since Sunday, causing roads to close and residents to be evacuated from some areas, local media reported.

The severe weather was expected to continue for New Zealand’s South Island throughout Tuesday before moving to the North Island on Wednesday, an alert by the national weather body, MetService, said. Credit: Jacob Schonberger via Storyful
