Like many of the creatures that populated its underworld, Grimm is rising from the dead.

It's been over a year-and-a-half since the supernatural thriller wrapped up its sixth and final season on NBC in the US, but the network is working to bring it back to life for a female-led spin-off.

According to Deadline, Zoo writer Melissa Glenn is working with the show's original production company on a concept that expands the Grimm mythology with "new dangers and epic new mysteries". It will center around a female Grimm guardian.

This pitch will introduce all new Wesen (or mythological creatures), new Grimms and potentially some familiar faces as well. Original series producer Sean Hayes (yes, he of Will & Grace) is back on board too.

Grimm aired on NBC from 2011 to 2017, with its final few seasons being saved as a result of hugely passionate social media campaigns from fans. Those same fans will probably be hugely excited by the spin-off news, since Grimm's final season had its episode count drastically slashed by NBC.

The original series was loosely based on the fairytales of the Brothers Grimm, although set in a modern day Portland where a balance had been struck between humans and mythical creatures.

In the UK, the show originally premiered on W (then known as Watch) and has since been available to stream on Netflix UK. The series finale aired in March 2017, and intriguingly featured a 20-year flash forward that might make things interesting for any spin-off project.
