‘Surreal’ Fireball Shoots Across the Sky Over Victoria

A huge fireball streaked across the skies over parts of Victoria and Tasmania on Friday evening, May 22, creating a spectacular sight for locals.

Describing the sight as “surreal”, farmer Thomas Toose told Storyful that the fireball from where he spotted it in Creswick “was massive and lasted about 20 seconds.”

It is unclear what caused the fireball, with The Age reporting that it was “believed to be space junk.”

The ABC reported that a Russian military satellite was expected to be launched at 5:30 pm on Friday, and was expected to be visible over parts of Victoria. Credit: Thomas Toose via Storyful
