Surrey pub one of the best in the UK for delicious Sunday roast dinners after revamp

If you're looking for a fabulous roast dinner this weekend, you've come to the right place if you've got a booking at the Merry Harriers. Named one of the UK's best for a roast dinner, the Merry Harriers is officially on the The Good Food Guide's radar.

The Guide’s search for the Top 50 Best Sunday Roasts, supported by Koffmann’s Potatoes and Tracklements, underlines the importance of championing those restaurants, pubs and cafes that are the backbone of the British dining scene. Thousands of nominations received show that a Sunday roast is Britain’s favourite meal with 75% of Good Food Guide readers stating it is the UK's most famous dish.

Taken over last year by Alex Winch and Sam Fiddian-Green, the Godalming pub has gone from strength to strength, and is now celebrating this seriously impressive accolade. Alex Winch is a director of Pickle and Winch, and has worked as a sommelier for Como Hotels, manager at Portland Restaurant and Smoke and Salt. Sam Fiddian-Green has experience working as a pastry chef in Denmark, and grew up in Godalming on the Wintershall Estate.

You may recognise the surname Fiddian-Green, Sam is the son of British sculptor, Nic Fiddian-Green, whose work can be seen in Surrey and across the UK. The pair have taken the very best of their hospitality experience and put it to good use which has shone through with their recent triumph.

The pub, in Hambledon Road, is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with plenty of rambling routes cutting through the Surrey Hills. It dates back to the 16th century and is a traditional village inn.

Cosy fireplaces, oak beams and hearty dishes make this pub a fabulous place to stop off. Why just stay for an hour or two, when the pub has perfectly good rooms to make a weekend of it? No need to worry about driving home when you can fall into a cosy bed after a delicious dinner and a cocktail or two.

There are four bedrooms at the inn, or six garden rooms and five shepherd huts for those feeling a little more adventurous. Children and dogs are welcome too, which is always a big plus in our eyes.

Seasonal cooking is the true core of the operation, and you'll find some quintessential British cuisine on the menus. The Merry Harriers changes its menu frequently to match the season's offerings, making it a sustainable kitchen.

Winter Sunday menus feature an English pea soup with Devon smoked eel and lovage starter for £10.50, or roast beetroot, candied walnuts, rosary goats cheese and bitter leaves for £12. For mains, customers can tuck into a home-reared banger, colcannon and no nonsense onion gravy at £16.50 or pan roast lemon sole with wild garlic, Wye Valley asparagus and Jersey royals £24.

Roasts are too tempting, made to share between two people. There's the roast pork collar from the farm, bramley apple sauce and crispy pork belly or Trenchmore farm Sussex and Wagyu roast beef sirloin with horseradish cream for £26 per person. No Sunday dinner is complete without a sweet treat, and the inn doesn't disappoint with the Jamaican ginger sticky toffee pudding and whisky toffee sauce or the ‘Ello treacle tart with clotted cream for £9 and £9.50.
