Suspect Arrested After Aiming BB Gun at Officers

Orem Police released bodycam footage on October 19 showing a suspect aiming a BB gun at an officer before being arrested on September 30.

Officers were responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle with tinted back windows and were in the process of letting the occupants of the car go free until they found out that the rear passenger had given them a fake name.

The suspect can be heard in the video saying “kill me” after the police had disarmed and detained him.

Orem Police said that the BB gun looked and sounded like a real gun and that the officer only realized what the weapon was was after he had grabbed it out of the suspect’s hands. Orem Police said that the second officer had already drawn his handgun, but decided not to shoot because the first officer had gotten too close to the suspect and that, had the suspect been further away from the officer, the situation “may have ended differently.”

Orem Police said the release of the video was not meant as a critique of other incidents, adding “every use of force situation is different and can’t be compared to each other.” Credit: Facebook/Orem Police Department via Storyful
