Suspect in Killing of Jewish Community Leader Samantha Woll Released from Custody Without Charges

The Detroit synagogue president was found dead from stab wounds outside her home after attending a wedding, police said

A suspect who was arrested in connection with the stabbing death of Detroit Jewish community leader Samantha Woll has been released without being charged, according to reports.

On Wednesday, Detroit Police announced that it had taken a suspect into custody in connection with Woll’s Oct. 21 stabbing death. Authorities provided no details about the suspect or what led to the arrest.

On Friday, the suspect was released without any charges, the suspect’s attorney confirmed to the Detroit Free Press, CBS Detroit and Local 4 News.

The attorney had no further comment. She did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Woll was found stabbed to death outside her home in Detroit's Lafayette Park neighborhood on Oct. 21, PEOPLE reported previously.

She had returned home from a wedding before her brutal slaying, Local 4 reported, citing police.

After being stabbed inside, Woll “stumbled" out of her home and "collapsed" outside, leaving a trail of blood in her wake, Detroit Police Chief James White said in October.

The 40-year-old lay in in the street for "quite a while" before a witness discovered her, White added.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by officials after the witness saw her on the ground at about 6:30 a.m. and called 911.

A longtime Jewish community leader, Woll was president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue and worked as the Deputy District Director for Rep. Elissa Slotkin.

Last Wednesday, sources told Fox 2 Detroit that Detroit Police had arrested a suspect in the Kalamazoo area. (Kalamazoo is approximately 140 miles west of Detroit.)

Authorities executed a search warrant last week at the man’s home, a source told the Detroit Free Press. 

At an Oct. 23 press conference, the chief said there was “no evidence” that Woll was the victim of an antisemitic hate crime.

The Detroit Police Department did not immediately respond to People’s request for comment.
