A man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a young mum.

Kiena Dawes left her nine-month-old daughter, Marnie, with a close friend just hours before she was found on train tracks in July 2022. The tragedy happened just 11 days after she was allegedly assaulted.

Lancashire Constabulary referred itself to the police watchdog due to its contact with her before her death.

Kiena’s body was recovered from train tracks near the town of Garstang, Lancashire, as friends and family conducted a frantic search for her in nearby streets and alleyways. But before they could locate the missing 23-year-old, they got the terrible news her body had been found on a rail line just after 1pm, on Friday, July 22.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police confirmed Kiena had passed away on a train line and added they were not treating the death as suspicious.

Now, following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, Lancashire Police have charged Ryan Wellings, 30, with Manslaughter, Controlling and Coercive Behaviour and Assault occasioning Actual Bodily Harm.

Wellings, formerly of Fleetwood but now of Housman Close, Bispham, Blackpool was released on conditional bail to appear at Preston Magistrates Court on July 10, 2024.
