Manchester City cancelled their planned pre-match press conference with Pep Guardiola on Friday after he returned an inconclusive Covid-19 test result.

Guardiola is now waiting for the outcome of a follow-up PCR test.

City are due to face Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday.

If a second test comes back positive, Guardiola will be forced to self-isolate ahead of the Christmas period.

Guardiola this week travelled to Barcelona with City sporting director Txiki Begiristain and coach Lorenzo Buenaventura to attend Sergio Aguero’s announcement that he was retiring.

Guardiola was due to speak to the media at 12:30pm on Friday but City confirmed he would not be holding his planned press conference.

Should Guardiola return another positive result, his assistant manager Juanma Lillo will speak about the Newcastle match to the club’s in-house media channels

City are top of the Premier League, one point ahead of Liverpool after they thrashed Leeds 7-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.
