Sydenham Bypass resurfacing works update as weekend closure halted
Resurfacing works on the Sydenham Bypass will be put on hold this weekend due to the weather, it's been confirmed.
In an update issued by the Department for Infrastructure on Thursday afternoon, a spokesperson said the Sydenham Bypass will remain open on Saturday January 11, and Sunday January 12. It follows multiple days of freezing conditions and snow and ice warnings across Northern Ireland.
A statement read: "The Sydenham Bypass will remain open this weekend (Sat 11th and Sun 12th January). Due to persistent low temperatures throughout this week resurfacing works cannot proceed as planned. Weeknight closures, Monday to Friday between 10pm and 6am will continue.

"The Department will keep the public informed once further weekend closure dates are known."
Works are part of a £3.8m resurfacing sceme for the A2 Sydenham Bypass and completion is expected by early March 2025, subject to favourable weather conditions.
The DfI says to minimise disruption, works have been continue during weeknights and weekends. The Belfast-bound carriageway will be closed between Tillysburn and the M3 as follows:
Weeknights: 10:00 pm to 6:00 am, Monday to Thursday
Four additional weekends: 10:00 pm Friday to 6:00 am Monday. All weekend closures dates will be weather dependent and the Department will keep the public informed once dates are confirmed.
Some weekend and overnight lane closures will also be required on the country bound lanes to ensure the safety of road workers and the travelling public while work is undertaken.
