TfL T-Charge reaction LIVE: The latest as new London payment sees £10 added to congestion charge
The new weekday T-Charge targeted at the most polluting vehicles comes into force today in a bid to tackle toxic air.
Around 10,000 drivers are expected to be hit by the new fee, which will be on top of the current £11.50 congestion charge.
All petrol and diesel vehicles that breach the Euro IV emissions standards – generally those built before 2006 – will have to pay an extra £10 to enter the congestion charge zone.
The T-Charge will be an additional fee to the congestion charge, and will operate during the same times (Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm) and areas. If your vehicle is affected, it will cost a total £21.50 to drive in the zone.
The emissions surcharge comes after it emerged 9,000 Londoners a year die prematurely because of long-term toxic air exposure.
The standard gives emissions limits for cars, vans, buses, coaches and lorries. Drivers can check whether their vehicle is affected by the T-Charge via an online tool released by TfL.
The move comes as part of Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s latest drive to cut London’s toxic pollution levels. Mr Khan is investing £875mil over the next five years toward tackling air quality.
