When she was finally unveiled as the next president of the United States, Hillary Clinton was going to be dressed in suffragette white and stood atop a stage depicting a smashed glass ceiling. Instead, like some nightmare sequence in a late season episode of the West Wing, Donald Trump took the White House. Theresa May made it back to Downing Street with the help of the DUP.
The one-time presidential hopeful said that the “whole world should be concerned” by Trump, who pulled off a shock win against he in the US election last year.
On what was expected to be a quiet Friday morning last fall, the two U.S. presidential candidates were readying to square off in a Sunday night debate. Suddenly, the dizzying release of bombshell after bombshell over a 64-hour timespan would completely upend the entire weekend — and the American political landscape. Yahoo News offers firsthand accounts of these three pivotal days and paints a vivid picture of the behind-the-scenes drama that unfolded inside Trump Tower, the Clinton campaign, the Washington Post newsroom and the debate site in St. Louis.
Sheet1 Explore A firsthand account of the political drama that unfolded, Oct. 7-9, 2016, during the 2016 election, from the release of the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape to the second presidential debate — and everything in between.
Hillary Clinton opened up about her failed presidential campaign, how she handled losing to a reality TV star, and what that night was really like when she went in expecting to be the first female American president. SEE ALSO: Hillary Clinton calls Donald Trump 'a creep' in election memoir In a CBS Sunday Morning interview with anchor Jane Pauley (Clinton taped the segment Friday at her New York home), Clinton looked back at the past 10 months and shared some inside perspective of the campaign against Donald Trump. Since the election, and with a book coming out this week detailing about what happened, Clinton made clear in the Sunday interview that she's done running for public office. "I am done being a candidate," she said. But she's not done with politics, she assured. Clinton talked about the night and days after she lost. Late on election night after realizing this was not going as expected, she called Trump to concede and then she called President Obama. "I felt like I had let everybody down," she said. After an unexpected loss, she admits that she hadn't prepared for this scenario. "I had not drafted a concession speech," she said with a sad chuckle. "I had been working on a victory speech." As to how she dealt with the huge political blow, she cleaned, took plenty of long walks in the woods, and discovered the benefits of yogic breathing. "Off I went into a frenzy of closet cleaning and long walks in the woods, and playing with my dogs, and yoga — alternative nostril breathing, which I highly recommend — trying to calm myself down. And, you know, my fair share of chardonnay." Despite the jokes about how she coped, she admits she really struggled: "I couldn't feel, I couldn't think. I was just gobsmacked, wiped out." Looking back at the election, Clinton again called Trump a creep and talked about practice sessions to train for Trump "scowling and leering" at her at the second debate — right after the "grab them by the pussy" Access Hollywood tapes leaked. After staying relatively quiet about her personal take on the campaign, with the book coming out now we're hearing a lot more of the details straight from Clinton. The interview is embedded above.
