Taiwan Quake: Dozens Trapped In Tower Block

About 120 people remain buried within a tower block that collapsed during an earthquake in Taiwan.

Officials believe it will be possible to easily reach some of those trapped - but another 103 are buried deeper within the crumpled 17-storey building.

Acoustic equipment and sniffer dogs are being used to look for signs of life.

At least 23 people - including a newborn baby girl - have been confirmed dead after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck at about 4am on Saturday .

Seventeen of those killed were in the collapsed apartment block in the city of Tainan, which has a population of two million.

More than 240 people have been rescued from the building so far.

Taiwan authorities have raised questions over the quality of the construction of the tower, built in the early 1990s.

The tremors caused buildings in nine locations in Tainan to crumble.

Another five have been left tilting at alarming angles.

Reporters said they could hear cries of help from inside one destroyed building.

Authorities say 475 people have been injured in the city, but 368 of them had been discharged from hospitals by late Saturday afternoon.

Taiwan lies between two tectonic plates in the Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes.

In 1999, a 7.6-magnitude quake killed about 2,400 people.
