Tamara Ecclestone’s husband Jay Rutland has accused Lorraine Kelly of being rude and lacking in empathy for joking about their family home being burgled.

Thieves stole £50m worth of jewellery in a raid on the socialite's home in Kensington, west London, on Friday night just hours after Ecclestone had posted on Instagram that the family had flown by private jet to Lapland for a Christmas getaway.

Rutland wrote, also on Instagram: “It’s Christmas and when we have an excited 5 year old, nothing is going to dampen our festive spirit. Strange few days but as a family we move forward with our heads up and a smile. We are all safe and that is more important that any possessions.

“And to the people that want to laugh about what’s happened, like @lorrainekellysmith and @thekatethornton, I truly hope you never have to experience having your homes ransacked and violated. Perhaps if you heard my daughter asking if the burglars are going to come back you might have a little more empathy. Peace.”

Rutland and Ecclestone, 35, were in Lapland with their daughter Sofia when the raid took place.

Commenting on the robbery on ITV show Lorraine, presenter Kate Thornton said: “Maybe the moral of the story is, if you’ve got £50m of jewels at home, don’t let people know you’re not there.”

Kelly quipped: "Just get stuff from Claire’s Accessories and then nobody will want to steal it.”

Rutland said on his Instagram Stories: "Wow really annoyed me this morning watching @lorraine they laughed the entire time about how she shouldn't have 50million pounds worth of jewellery at her home [sic]

Ecclestone's father, former CEO of Formula One Group Bernie Ecclestone, has suggested the burglary may have been "an inside job".

He told MailOnline: “I don’t have all the facts but, given all the security at the house, I’m assuming it was an inside job.

“It’s an awful thing to happen just after she had left the house to go to Lapland. Although maybe it’s better that she wasn’t in at the time.”

Bernie Ecclestone, 89, also told The Sun his daughter wouldn’t be cutting her Christmas holiday short, saying: "I think they have something organised for after. They won't [come home early.]”
