Yahoo News Tarantino's R-rated Star Trek movie is taking shape
Quentin Tarantino is going to take Star Trek where it's never gone before.
The science fiction fixture originally envisioned by creator Gene Roddenberry as uplifting and family-friendly will embrace more adult themes if current producer JJ Abrams opts to go with a sequel idea from Tarantino (via Deadline).
Tarantino and Abrams reportedly met with writers Mark L. Smith (The Revenant), Lindsey Beer (Barbie) and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) this week about penning an R-rated script, with Smith emerging as the frontrunner for the job.
The plan is for a screenwriter to be picked soon, and for work to begin on the screenplay while Tarantino steps away to film his upcoming 1969 movie. He'd then come back to direct Star Trek if all goes well.
Paramount Pictures hasn't commented on the plot or confirmed Quentin Tarantino's involvement with the movie just yet, but Deadline indicates that a deal is very close to coming together.
Tarantino has talked in the past about wanting to make a feature version of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, which had a heavy time-travel theme.
In the 1990 episode, Captain Picard and his crew faced a moral dilemma in deciding whether they should send the time-displaced Enterprise-C back to its correct timeline and preserve history, knowing that the crew faced certain doom.
Such a concept would be a natural fit for a follow-up to last year's movie Star Trek Beyond, considering that Paramount has already confirmed that Chris Hemsworth will return as Captain Kirk's father George.
There's no release date yet for the next Star Trek movie, although we can expect that any release won't be until well after Tarantino's 1969 movie hits US cinemas on August 9, 2019.
