Taron Egerton shows off his vocal talents as Sir Elton John in new Rocketman teaser

Taron Egerton proves that he’s the perfect choice to play Sir Elton John in a new Rocketman teaser clip, which sees him sing Tiny Dancer in the style of the iconic musician.

The new behind-the-scenes featurette, released earlier today, shows Egerton doing an uncanny impression of the legendary star as he tackles one of the singer’s biggest hits in the recording studio.

“The thing about playing someone who is so beloved, all we can do is give our heartfelt interpretation of his life and his music,” the 29-year-old said in the clip.

“Elton’s songs are the defining moments in people’s lives and these songs should all come from a place of character,” he continued, before going on to reveal that “making this film” had been “the greatest joy of [his] professional life” so far.

Elsewhere in the clip, director Dexter Fletcher praised the Kingsman star for his “incredible range,” and emphasised the authenticity of his performance.

“Taron’s actually singing in the film and he’s so convincing and his voice is incredible,” he said.

Music producer Giles Martin suggested that Sir Elton himself was impressed by Egerton’s performance, revealing: “Elton said, ‘I don’t think I have heard anyone sing my songs better than Taron.’”

“I don’t think there’s anyone in the world who could play Elton, it’s Taron’s role,” he added.

Egerton has previously revealed that film is a “fantasy musical” rather than a straightforward biopic.

“It’s actually [Sir Elton’s] songs used to express important beats in his life at emotional moments,” he told Digital Spy last year. “He’s not the only character that sings. It’s going to be fun.”

The film will also star Jamie Bell as the musician’s long-time collaborator Bernie Taupin, while Bodyguard’s Richard Madden will play his manager John Reid.

Bryce Dallas Howard will play the singer’s mother Sheila Farebrother.

Rocketman will open in UK cinemas in May
