Tasmanian Protests With Tree-Sit Vigil to Protect Tarkine Forest
A Tasmanian doctor launched a tree-sit in the Tarkine forest of Tasmania on February 19 to protest possible logging across 400,000 hectares of the wilderness.
Amid fears the deforestation could begin in the coming weeks, Dr Lisa Searle recorded footage from her tree house on Monday, February 21, calling for the Tarkine’s protection.
Conservationists are hoping to prevent the logging of 400,000 hectares of forest, proposed by Tasmania’s forestry minister Guy Barnett, the ABC reported.
The foundation also organised a non-violent protest to be held in Hobart on Friday, February 24, claiming various species would be threatened if the logging goes ahead.
Barnett told the ABC the state government was “committed to the protection of all threatened species, including the giant freshwater crayfish.” In November 2016 he was quoted saying he did not support transforming the Tarkine into a national park. Credit: Facebook/Bob Brown Foundation via Storyful
