Taylor Swift Addressed Canceling Her Vienna Shows With a Heartbreaking Message
"Silence is actually showing restraint."
The European leg of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour has come to an end. With that chapter closed, the singer took a moment to reflect on the cancelation of three dates scheduled for Vienna after local authorities uncovered a planned terrorist attack. In a heartfelt message, Swift explained why she waited to address the incident and shared that she felt a "rollercoaster of emotions" as she faced newfound fears and guilt.
“Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows,” she wrote in an Instagram post on Wednesday, August 21. “But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives.”
She continued, explaining that she was “heartened by the love and unity” that her fans showed in the wake of the Vienna shows. Many gathered to sing Swift songs and exchange friendship bracelets, which has been a hallmark of the Eras Tour. Additionally, she wrote that she and her team worked with London authorities to ensure that fans were safe for the final batch of shows at Wembley Stadium.
“Let me be very clear: I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows,” she wrote. “In cases like this one, ‘silence’ is actually showing restraint, and waiting to express yourself at a time when it’s right to. My priority was finishing our European tour safely, and it is with great relief that I can say we did that.”
Swift added that her London shows felt like a “beautiful dream sequence,” and that the performances gave her a sense of “carefree calm” onstage. The last few shows have featured Swift's famous friends, including Ed Sheeran, Florence Welch, and Jack Antonoff.
“To the fans who have seen us this summer, you’ll always have the most sparkling place in my memories,” she finished. “You were a dream to perform for, dance with, and share those magical moments with. We’ll see you all again when we resume The Eras Tour in October, but for now we get to take a much needed rest. Thank you for the adventure of a lifetime. May it continue…”
People notes that three arrests have been made in connection to the terror plot in Vienna. Swift originally had three shows scheduled from August 8 to 10.
