Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither were the careers of your favourite celebrities, who usually have massive teams behind them helping the everyday business of being a star run smoothly.

Though they normally shy away from the spotlight, the secret weapons of Hollywood's elite occasionally nudge into interviews or pop up on the social media feeds of their famous clients.

Others have even been rewarded for their loyalty and given trusted roles in the A-lister's spin-off businesses. Some even develop a large splinter following of their own - like Paris Hilton’s former wardrobe assistant Kim Kardashian.

So who are these (normally) invisible but crucial behind-the-scenes fixers? Here's a few of the biggest.

Tree Paine, Taylor Swift’s publicist

Paine is never far from her client Swift and featured heavily in the singer’s documentary Miss Americana.

The former publicity VP of Warner Music Nashville joined Swift’s team on 2014 and has been an integral presence ever since, helping guide Swift through controversies, break-ups and very public bust-ups with the likes of Kanye West and Scooter Braun

The publicist, who in the past has called out “false” stories about her client on Twitter, was seen in the documentary drinking with Swift and helping her make her first political statement online.

Though Tree's career has seen her work with Snoop Dogg at Interscope Records and Christian music artists at Warner, Swift is one of her biggest clients to date and the pair appear to have formed a close bond.

She's married to Lance Paine, who works with Scott Brothers Global - the brand behind Property Brothers.

Jean Black, Brad Pitt's make-up artist

Black and Pitt have a relationship that has spanned three decades, which began when she worked with him on the 1990 film Cool World before he catapulted to fame.

Although she rarely speaks publicly about her friendship with Pitt, she told GQ they had done almost 30 films together and said they were “quite close” and “both loners.”

“To have travelled the world with him… It's a whole life that I would never have thought possible. It’s pretty unusual for someone like Brad, or someone in that position, to be so loyal,” she said.

“When I’m working with him I try to be as professional as possible, but it’s pretty obvious to people that he and I are quite close. He’s there for me and I’m there for him,” she explained.

Black, who won awards for her work with Pitt on films such as Se7en and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, has continued to work with him on his more recent projects including Ad Astra and Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood.

In fact, Pitt wanted to express his gratitude to Black (who he said was “like family”) so teamed up with the Property Brothers this year to help renovate her home.

It was clear how much the pair meant to one another as they both teared up in the reveal. Black embraced Pitt and told him, “I love you Brad.”

Sam, Daniel Radcliffe’s bodyguard

Identified only as Sam in a New York Times profile, Radcliffe and this movie-star handsome bodyguard have worked together for years.

The profile said he was like one of Radcliffe’s “older brothers: fun, but responsible and organised” and he’s helped keep the Harry Potter star safe throughout the years, whether at the Venice Film Festival or the stage door in London.

The profile detailed how Sam planned his 2013 Venice Film Festival appearance down to the smallest detail - including how to get Radcliffe to the bathroom safely without being mobbed by fans. He’s frequently seen towering over the actor's shoulder, never more than a couple of paces away.

Chrissy Teigen’s household team

Teigen has spoken openly in the past about the nannies, house manager and chef she employs to help her and John Legend’s family - alongside her mother Pepper, who lives with them.

Teigen, who runs her own cooking empire, paid tribute to the people who she said “make our dysfunctional house functional", sharing a picture of her son Miles, Chef Paul Barbosa and two nannies (one of whom she has previously identified as Bronwyn Reed).

She, Barbosa and Reed have also rocked matching pyjamas in the past, wearing custom designs printed with John Legend’s People's 'Sexiest Man Alive' cover.

She explained previously, “We have 4 incredible people [to help nanny], not all at once. One will rotate and stay through the night."

Though a number of celebrities have nannies, Teigen is particularly open about it. She told Vanity Fair: “I hate pretending that we do it on our own. We have daytime help, nighttime, weekend. I don't know how my mom did it.

Elise Loehnen, chief content officer of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop

As Gwyneth Paltrow’s controversial lifestyle brand Goop has expanded into an empire of vagina candles and jade eggs, there’s one woman who helps her run it all - Elise Loehnen.

Loehnen, who works as the brand’s Chief Content Officer, co-hosts its podcast and features in The Goop Lab, revealed that she works closely with Paltrow who is a “very operational CEO” and hands on when it comes to the business.

In the Goop Lab, Loehnen is seen with Paltrow trying out various Goop-approved treatments and has over the years defended her boss and the brand fiercely. With Loehnen claiming that the brand is not “pseudoscience”, she admitted to Digiday that Paltrow could be “polarizing for so many people” but was inspirational regardless.

“She’s never asked for permission. She never said, ‘Is it OK with everyone I stopped being an actress and became a businessperson and someone in media?’ She’s unwilling to stop in the face of criticism. For a lot of women, she’s come to represent what it means to stand up for yourself, to not be cowed and to live in that discomfort,” she continued.

Law Roach, Zendaya’s stylist

Zendaya’s transformation from Disney channel star into one of Hollywood’s biggest It Girls on the scene today was strongly influenced by her stylist, Law Roach. The pair are incredibly close and Roach revealed in an interview that he mapped out a “plan of attack” for Zendaya when he began working with the then 14-year-old star.

He said, “Nobody wanted to dress the Disney girl, so I came up with this plan of attack for her... Zendaya was my muse and creative. I spent a lot of time to build this blueprint for how I thought I could garner her acceptance in fashion.”

Both Zendaya and Roach attend high profile events together and their work has garnered Roach accolades as one of Hollywood’s most powerful stylists, with Versace and more designers clamouring to work with them.

He explained to VH1 that he had been given a lot of “creative” freedom with Zendaya early on, helping to raise her profile by doing “little sneaky things” such as initially dressing her in the same outfits as other celebrities so she would be featured in magazines and even recommending hotspots for her to go to in order to be seen.

It’s clear that Roach is somebody who Zendaya trusts deeply, as he has helped spearhead some of her most adventurous fashion business projects - including her Tommy Hilfiger x Zendaya collaborations.

Having previously called Zendaya his “fashion soul mate” and “annoying little sister” in the past, he has also worked with the likes of Celine Dion and currently styles Ariana Grande and Jameela Jamil. He’s even moved into the world of television alongside Jamil, as he is a co-host on the voguing talent show Legendary.

The pair exemplified just how strong their bond was at the Met Gala, when he and Zendaya appeared in Cinderella and Fairy Godmother outfits. As Roach waved his magic wand, Zendaya’s dress began to magically light up - a moment he described as them “leaving [her Disney years] behind” as the “last moment of this Disney princess.”

Jeff Leatham, the Kardashians’ go-to florist

The Kardashian family is known for their over the top approach to parties (usually planned by Mindy Weiss) and decor - and there’s only one man for the job when it comes to their florals. Leatham, who is the creative floral director for the Four Seasons George IV in Paris, frequently drops in to help create jaw-dropping displays from the family, from the over the top romantic gestures for Kylie Jenner, Kris Jenner’s famous Christmas displays and Kim Kardashian’s wedding flowers.

Speaking with Teen Vogue, he said, “The Kardashians really have been my biggest supporters. And they're so lovely, and they're very, very protective of me, and I'm very protective of them. They're like my family. Kris has really helped me become a success here in Los Angeles.”

Saying that he had “relationships with them on a personal level”, the stars frequently shout him out on Instagram as they share his designs - from major set pieces such as Jenner’s flood of rose petals for Valentine’s Day through to smaller Thanksgiving centrepieces for Khloe.

Sarah Tanno, Lady Gaga’s makeup artist

Lady Gaga and Tanno have a strong bond and the singer was even a bridesmaid at Tanno’s wedding, revealing she was one of her “best friends.” Tanno, who has worked with Gaga on everything from her award-winning American Horror story make-up to the Superbowl, said being introduced as Gaga’s makeup artist for the first time was a “pinch-me-moment.”

She also recalled her first meeting with Lady Gaga, which was a stressful one as she only had “about 20 minutes to do a full show look.” She said that Gaga “looked at me and said 'Live your eyeliner, Breathe your lipstick'" - which is now a quote she has tattooed on her arm. Calling her client a “chameleon”, she added that she was the “luckiest artist in the world to have a partner that loves to change and break boundaries in beauty.”

Since they first began working with one another, Gaga has even entrusted Tanno with her brand new business venture Haus Laboratories, where Tanno serves as global artistry director for the makeup company. Of course, she’s managed to juggle that alongside helping with the groundbreaking beauty looks for Gaga’s latest Chromatica chapter.

Scooter Braun, Ariana Grande’s manager

Although Braun might best be known for his feud with Taylor Swift (and by proxy Tree Paine), he’s been the force behind many high profile careers including Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Demi Lovato. His relationship with Grande, in particular, is incredibly strong and he has supported the '7 Rings' singer through thick and thin, with one of their most difficult times being after the Manchester bombing.

In the wake of the atrocity which claimed the lives of 22 concertgoers, Braun helped Grande throughout the situation - giving a speech on her behalf at One Love Manchester because she didn’t feel she could do it herself and accompanying her to meet the families of victims which he called the “hardest two hours of his life.”

“After the first family, I had to help her, she was distraught and I was lost. She sat and talked to every one of those families and that is far beyond being a superstar. That’s being a superhuman,” he said on the Big Questions podcast.

“It was beyond tough. But every single time we got down we reminded each other we get to go home. Our loved ones are still going to be there,” he explained.

He also helped Grande organise One Love Manchester shortly after the tragedy, which he said was the “greatest show [he’s] ever been a part of.” Though their relationship has been on and off (Braun hinted at an appearance that her firing of him in February 2016 had been influenced by “sh***y boyfriends” before they reunited again), he’s clearly her biggest cheerleader as he praised her “strength.”

“I’ll say aloud to anyone that Ariana Grande, for the rest of my life, will be a hero in my eyes. What I saw her do [in Manchester]...The position she was put in was not fair, but she saw her responsibility,” he told Music Week.

Braun is also credited with helping put Justin Bieber on a healthier path and inspiring his religious transformation.

Atkin, who founded her own haircare brand Ouai, is in high demand in Hollywood and Bella Hadid is just one of her many clients. Over lockdown, Atkin shared a tutorial on Instagram about how to cut your own hair and it appears that her client Bella took her advice - choosing to cut her own hair as Atkin praised her in the comments.

In fact, Bella even posted a picture of one of her bad hair days and tagged Atkin on Instagram writing, “You there??...Sos.”

Atkin has previously talked about the collaborative relationship she and Bella share, telling Elle UK about how they both arrived on a hair look for the Met Gala together. She said, “Bella Hadid is loving the 90s at the moment so when I styled her lob for the Met Gala we were really inspired by the old magazine covers with Christy Turlington and Helena Christensen.'

Besides Bella, Atkin is also the go-to for celebrities including Chrissy Teigen, the Kardashian family, Bella’s sister Gigi and more.

Ben Winston, Harry Styles’ “friendly mentor”

Fine Line on repeat 🙌🏼❤️

A post shared by Ben Winston (@mrbenwinston) on Dec 19, 2019 at 8:16am PST

Late Late Show executive producer Ben Winston has been described as Harry Styles’ “friendly mentor” and played a pivotal role early in Styles’ career, as he helped the former One Direction star. When Styles was house hunting, he asked to live with Winston temporarily - but wound up living in the producer’s attic for 18-20 months.

Although Styles is one of the most photographed men in the world, Winston revealed that nobody “ever found out, really” that Styles was living with him. He said, “Even when we went out for a meal, [we live in] such a sweet family neighbourhood, no one dreamed it was actually him. But he made our house a home. And when he moved out, we were gutted."

Even after Styles sadly left Winston’s home, the pair continued working together - even creating a sitcom together based on their unusual living experience (which sadly was shortlived). They still find opportunities to work together as Styles frequently drops by The Late Late Show to do everything from zipline across traffic singing his biggest hits, as well as to play substitute host for James Corden.
