Teacher Pins Student to Floor, Pulls Hair During Fight at Louisville High School

A high school teacher has been temporarily removed from his position and a 16-year-old student was suspended and faced an assault charge after a fight broke out in a school hallway in Louisville, Kentucky, on August 23, local news reports said.

Footage captured by student Meredith Biven shows the teacher, identified by local media as a chemistry instructor, holding the student down on the floor in the hallway at Marion C Moore School, then later pulling his hair. The footage does not show the beginning of the fight.

Speaking to WAVE 3 News, the 16-year-old student, identified as Jamir Strane, said the fight started when the teacher objected to the type of face covering he was wearing.

According to WDRB, Strane said he started the fight when provoked by comments made by the teacher, but accused the school employee of taking the fight too far.

When contacted, Marion C Moore School referred Storyful to Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) for a statement. JCPS had not responded to requests for comment by the time of publishing.

In a statement reported by WDRB, JCPS spokesperson Renee Murphy said: “So right now exactly what happened is being reviewed, it’s being looked at, and while that review is taking place, we know the teacher will not be in the classroom. The review will talk to witnesses and they will gather more information about any kind of verbal exchanges that took place.”
