Teacher who got drunk and looked up sex toys on school laptop during lessons is banned from classroom

A teacher has been banned from the classroom after she got drunk in lessons and used a school laptop to browse the Internet for sex toys.

Jill Collins caused concern with her co-workers at the Castledon school in Wickford, Essex, when she turned up to work slurring her words.

The 56-year-old special needs teacher refused to leave the school grounds after it became “apparent that she was under the influence of alcohol”.

She had to be escorted off the premises by police after failing a breath test while colleagues who checked her emails found messages to her partner that contained links to the Ann Summers website.

The National College for Teaching and Leadership panel heard that one email was sent to a porn website that appeared to be an attempt to cancel her membership.

Despite being suspended from the school, Collins contacted staff and parents on another 12 occasions – including one case where she left “aggressive” voicemails to one parent.

An allegation that Collins viewed dating websites on her work laptop during class time was not upheld because her browsing history showed that she only used them outside of school hours.

Jayne Millions, on behalf of the education minister, told the hearing that Collins’ behaviour amounted to “unacceptable professional conduct”.

She said: “The fact that Mrs Collins attended school whilst under the influence of alcohol and was responsible for pupils with learning difficulties, potentially leading to safeguarding issues had her behaviour not been reported promptly, was a significant factor.”

Collins blamed her behaviour on migraine medication when she was found to be drunk in charge of pupils.

She did not appear at the hearing but was banned from the profession at least until February 2019.
