The team at an Edinburgh castle have stumbled upon a 400-year-old deed to the land, that reveals a fascinating history.

The deed, which is written on traditional goat skin, dates back to 1591. It relates to Carlowrie Castle, an events venue near Edinburgh Airport.

Written in Latin, the hand-written note references several famous figures including King James VI, Sir James Sandilands and Lord Torphicen.

Details in the deed add to an "already impressive" history at the castle. It was once home to the renowned Arctic explorer and botanist Isobel Wylie Hutchison.

She defied stereotypes of the time, and chose to live a life of adventure. Traversing Iceland and Germany on solo expeditions, she also spoke eight languages fluently.

Andrew Marshall, owner and CEO at the castle said: “The discovery of the original goat skin deed to the Carlowrie land is truly remarkable and we’re immensely grateful to the diligent historian who found it."

"Since obtaining the deed we’ve really focused on exploring the rich history of Carlowrie prior to the current castle we know today. Looking through the National Records of Scotland and working with theNational Library of Scotland is allowing us to piece together Carlowrie's fascinating story."

The deed was discovered at an auction house by a Scottish historian and presented to Andrew. While more information is needed to understand the role this document has played in the history of Carlowrie, it has inspired Andrew and his team to delve deeper into the history of the land.
