Team GB Curlers Miss Out On Gold In Sochi

Team GB's curling team have missed out on gold in the Winter Olympics following a 9-3 defeat to Canada.

The Canadians dominated from the very start and, once the score reached 9-3, Great Britain captain Dave Murdoch conceded the match.

The silver medal adds to the bronze won by the ladies on Thursday, making it a successful Olympics for Britain's curlers.

Murdoch, a three-time Olympian, guided his boys to the final with victory over world champions Sweden on Wednesday.

However, in Friday's final they found themselves 5-1 down after just three ends as Murdoch, Greg Drummond, Scott Andrews and Michael Goodfellow struggling to cope with an onslaught from the brash Canadian team.

"We just never got off to a good start," said Murdoch. "We were struggling after three, and when you go 5-1 down to a team of that calibre it's extremely difficult to come back.

"I'm disappointed now but a silver medal is scarily cool. I think I'll appreciate it in about 10 minutes."

Overall, Team GB now have four medals in Russia after Lizzy Yarnold won skeleton gold and snowboard slopestyler Jenny Jones took bronze.

The haul matches Britain's best ever at a Winter Olympics.

The silver also means Team GB have surpassed UK Sport's medal target of three for Sochi.

"It seems really weird saying that we are silver medallists," said Goodfellow.

"The fact that for three of us this is our first Olympics, to come away with a silver medal is amazing."

For Canada it was a hat-trick of curling golds dating back to 2006.
