A Teesside team of inspiring social works have been nominated for a prestigious award.

The Asylum Through Care Team at redcar-and-cleveland-council>Redcar and Cleveland Council is in the running for the Team of the Year, Children's Services (including MDTs) Award, a top honour among England's national accolades for social workers.

The team has been recognised for their extraordinary practice in supporting and guiding separated migrant young people towards independence. For decades, the team has been working with vulnerable young people, breaking down barriers and offering them a safe space to learn important life skills.

This is the second year a social worker from the Council has been shortlisted for this major national award. Last year, Ben Chisanga, a member of the team, was the runner-up for the Social Worker of the Year Awards 2023. The winners will be announced at a special event this November in London.

The finalists were chosen by panels of independent judges including previous award winners, social workers, industry leaders and people with lived experience of social work. The Social Worker of the Year Awards is the only major national awards event for social work in England, attracting hundreds of entries every year.

The Team’s Manager, Elaine Spencer, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be shortlisted for this award, it has given the team a huge boost to see that our hard work has been recognised.”

Cllr Bill Suthers, Cabinet Member for Children, said: “It is always a great joy to see our social workers receiving the recognition they deserve for their unbelievable work. I would like to thank each one of them for going above and beyond looking after the young people. They are truly inspiring, and I am looking forward to hearing the final results in November.”

Peter Hay CBE, Chair of the Social Work Awards, said: “This year we received hundreds of entries which goes to show how passionate organisations and individuals are to shine a light on the inspirational achievements of an often-overlooked profession.

“We would like to thank all those who took the time to nominate a friend, colleague, or team for an award this year. To our finalists, we’d like to say congratulations! Being nominated for a national award, whilst supporting others during very challenging times in a year of big changes, is a remarkable achievement of which you should be very proud.”

This year the Awards have 18 categories across both children’s and adult services including two new categories for 2024; the Technology Enabled Lives and Practice Award and Practitioner-Led Research Award.
