Tear Gas Used to Disperse Protesters Near Government Palace in Beirut

Tear gas was used by security forces as protesters, mainly retired soldiers, attempted to move toward the government palace in Beirut on Wednesday, March 22, according to Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar.

Footage posted to Twitter by @Akhbaralsaha shows the crowd of protesters waving Lebanese flags in the Riad El Solh area.

An-Nahar reported some protesters suffered breathing problems from tear gas used as demonstrators tried to remove barbed wire blocking access to the government palace, or Grand Serail.

The demonstration took place after Lebanon’s pound hit a new low against the US dollar on Tuesday. Credit: @Akhbaralsaha via Storyful
