Teenager Appears In Court Over PC's Death

Teenager Clayton Williams has appeared in court in connection with the death of PC Dave Phillips.

Williams, 18, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via video link from HMP Altcourse.

He is accused of the murder of PC Phillips and of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent to PC Thomas Birkett, who jumped out of the way as the car collided with PC Phillips.

Williams faces additional charges in connection with the initial burglary and aggravated vehicle-taking of the pick-up truck during the break-in at an estate agent's in Oxton, Merseyside, on Monday, when a cash till, fishing equipment and electrical items were stolen.

Williams' solicitor released a statement after the hearing.

It read: "There has understandably been a lot of media coverage in relation to the tragic death of PC Dave Phillips.

"We would simply ask that it be borne in mind that the coverage has by no means given the full picture.

"It is now time for the judicial process to take over and we would ask that all bear in mind Mr Williams' right to a fair trial.

"To be charged and to be convicted are very different and we therefore ask that Mr Williams not be tried in the media but rather in due course, by a judge and jury."

Williams's co-accused Philip Mark Stuart, 30, of Mayfair Court, Prenton, Wirral, is accused of burglary and aggravated vehicle-taking and death caused by an accident, after allegedly being carried in the Mitsubishi.

Both were remanded in custody to reappear at the court on 22 October.
