A teenager has been left dead and another in a critical condition after the bike they were on was involved in a crash with a suspected hit-and-run drink driver.

The boys, 17 and 19, were on the same bike when it was involved in a collision with a grey Vauxhall Insignia on Oldham Road in Greater Manchester just before 3am on Saturday morning.

The car left the scene, but five minutes later police received another report that the same vehicle had collided with a taxi in nearby Failsworth, Oldham.

The driver of the Insignia fled on foot and Greater Manchester Police said officers were sent to both scenes to find those involved.

A 27-year-old man was arrested nearby on suspicion of dangerous driving and drink driving.

Both cyclists were taken to hospital where the 17-year-old died as a result of his injuries. The 19-year-old remains in a critical condition. No one in the taxi was injured.

The 27-year-old remains in custody for questioning.

Inspector Danny Byrne, from Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a horrific set of events that tragically took the life of a teenager and has left another fighting for his life, and we are doing all we can to support their families at this unimaginably difficult time.

“We immediately deployed several resources to the scenes and while we have a man in custody, our enquiries are still in the early stages and remain ongoing.

“I would urge anyone with any information to get in touch. If you think you saw the insignia in the area last night or witnessed either of these collisions, please call police as soon as possible.
