Teen driver second to die after Audi crashes into tree

A second teenager has died days after a car crashed into a tree. Police have confirmed the 18-year-old driver of an Audi A3 Sport died in hospital this morning (Thursday, September 12), the day after it was announced a 16-year-old passenger had died in hospital from injuries suffered in the crash.

Lancashire Police were called to Chain Caul Way at around 10.55pm on Tuesday, September 10, between Leeward Road and Nile Close, near to the docks in Preston, after reports of a crash. Officers arrived to find an Audi, which had been travelling in the direction of Lea, had left the carriageway and hit a tree by the side of the road.

Three people, aged 16, 17 and 18 years old, were rushed to hospital, with police confirming the 16-year-old, who was sat in the back of the car had died in hospital. The force has now announced the 18-year-old driver is the second fatality following the crash.

The 17-year-old, was a passenger in the front of the car, suffered serious injuries and is in a stable condition in hospital.

Police continue to appeal for witnesses of the crash and for CCTV and dashcam footage from the area around that time. Sgt Paul McCurrie, of Lancashire Police’s Road Policing Unit, said: "This was a collision with tragic circumstances.

"Two young people have died, and I wish to extend my sympathy to their families, loved ones and friends. We are investigating how the collision happened, and we continue to ask for anyone who witnessed it to contact us.

"Also, if anyone was driving in the Chain Caul Lane area around the time of the collision and has dash cam footage, or they have CCTV footage from the area, please get in touch."
