A 14-year-old girl died after she ate a pickled egg in secret while she was on a diet, an inquest has heard.

Anna Sexton, who lived with her paternal grandparents Michael and Sally-Anne Sexton, desperately called out to her granddad, who attempted CPR at her home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

Anna, who weighed nearly 22 stone and had a BMI of 47, was declared dead shortly after arriving at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on the evening of June 8 this year.

She had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Gloucestershire Coroner’s Court heard that Anna had struggled with her weight and was trying to diet.

Coroner’s officer David Peake said: “She was severely obese and weighed 22 stone and had a tendency to gorge on pickled eggs at night.

“According to her grandparents she would sneak downstairs to eat them.”

Shortly after 7pm on the night Anna died, Mrs Sexton saw her granddaughter in the kitchen but left the room when she received a telephone call.

Mr Peake said: “Her grandmother then heard her husband shouting for help. She returned to the kitchen to see Anna lying on the floor in the lavatory and her husband was performing CPR.

“Anna had been eating a pickled egg and choked. Her grandfather slapped her on the back in an attempt to clear her airways but she collapsed on the floor.”

Anna was declared dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Mr Peake added: “The ambulance staff struggled to get an airway and did discover egg in her tube ways.

“Airway blockage was consistent with the account given by the grandparents. Pieces of egg were found in her tracheal pipe.”

Assistant coroner for Gloucestershire Caroline Saunders recorded a verdict of misadventure.

Anna had been living with her grandparents, who were her legal guardians, in Cheltenham, Glos., since 2011.

The inquest heard she was in regular contact with her mother Laura Gibbs, father Kevin Sexton and siblings.

Her devastated mum launched an emotional appeal earlier this year to help fund the funeral of her “bubbly, music loving daughter”.
