A teenager has been left with "life-threatening" injuries after a motorbike he was riding was involved in a crash.

The boy, 17, is in a "critical condition" in hospital, Northumbria Police confirmed. The collision happened on Croxdale Terrace, Pelaw, at around 9.30pm on Friday. The teenager was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.

The car involved a silver Nissan X-Trail and the black motorbike on which the teenager had been riding. His family are currently being supported by specialist officers.

The driver of the Nissan remained on the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries. Northumbria Police has now issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward.

The road was closed for a number of hours following the collision, but has since reopened. The force's Roads Policing Unit has launched a full investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision – and has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The officers are particularly keen to hear from motorists who were driving in the area at the time - and any witnesses who may have dashcam footage or CCTV which could assist their enquiries.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic collision last night (16 August) near Croxdale Terrace in Pelaw shortly after 9:30pm. We dispatched one ambulance crew and one doctor, one patient was taken to RVI hospital."
