Teenager Killed In Speedboat Crash Named

A schoolgirl who died when a speedboat overturned has been named by police as Emily Gardner.

Lifeboats, the coastguard, divers and a helicopter were called to Brixham harbour in Devon and found the 14-year-old trapped in the upturned vessel.

Emily, who was from the Gloucester area, was taken to Torbay Hospital in a critical condition, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

A 50-year-old man and two 15-year-old girls, who were also in the speedboat, were rescued by two men on jet skis.

They were taken to hospital by ambulance and treated for minor injuries.

Emily was on holiday with school friends when the accident happened at midday on Saturday.

The adult on board is believed to be the father of one of the girls.

Emily's family said in a statement: "Our beautiful Emily was a caring loving, gentle daughter and sister.

"She was full of life and had the world ahead of her. She was our diamond, now shining bright in the sky.

"She will be missed and forever in our hearts."

Friends and relatives also paid tribute to her on social media.

Sharon Ashley posted on Facebook: "My beautiful, beautiful niece, love you so much sleep tight."

Friend Michael Gamble said: "My thoughts go out to the family and friends of every person involved with what's tragically happened.

"I hope that for the others involved, there is no permanent/serious damage. All such lovely ladies. Get well soon.

"As for Emily, she never failed to smile and make others smile, so I'll try my best to do the same during these circumstances - knowing that if there is a heaven, she is most definitely up there.

"Best of wishes to the Gardner family. Rest in peace."

Officers said the 16ft speedboat and the jet skis have been taken away for examination.
