Teenager who livestreamed car crash that killed her 14-year-old sister says she 'looked like a monster'

A teenager who livestreamed the car crash that killed her 14-year-old sister online has said she regretted what happened and realised she "looked like a monster".

Obdulia Sanchez, 18, of Stockton, California, was allegedly drunk driving and filming herself on Instagram when she lost control of the car and veered onto the shoulder of a road, authorities said.

Her 14-year-old sister, Jacqueline Sanchez, was thrown from the car and died. Her friend, Manuela Seja, also 14, was also hurled from of the vehicle, but survived the crash.

Speaking after the accident which happened about 75 miles (120.7 kilometres) north west of Fresno, California, Ms Sanchez said that if she had "known that was going to happen that day, I would've never left the house".

Talking about the video, she told Eyewitness News during a phone interview from jail: "I didn't even know I looked like a monster – like I look like a freaking horrible monster. That was not my intention at all."

She added the group of girls "were perfectly freaking fine" when "the next thing I know, we started going left, then I started to stop the car. Then we flipped over."

Ms Sanchez admitted this was not the first time she had livestreamed while driving and that "people take video of them in the cars all the time".

"We do it all the time - all the time. Trust me it's like a reflex," she said.

Ms Seja, who suffered a leg injury, previously blamed social media for the crash.

"It's all affected by social media. That's what life is now. And it's going to advance more and more. That what it's going to be about," she said.

Ms Sanchez said she "started freaking out" when she realised the two young girls riding in the car with her were not in the back seat. She said she knew her sister was dead because she had no pulse.

The California Highway Patrol said the 14-year-old girls sitting at the back of the car were not wearing seat belts.

Ms Sanchez continued to film the scene after she called emergency services. In the video, she is seen standing over the body of her sister saying she was sorry and that it was the last thing she wanted to happen.

The 18-year-old also said she received a phone call from her younger sister telling her their father was expecting the girls to return in an hour and asking her where she was.

"And I just started balling - crying. Like I didn't know what to tell me dad," she said.

Thinking about her sister she said: "She's like my mini-me - like my best friend.

"Any time I look at her, it's like I'm looking at myself. It makes me really sad that she's gone."

Ms Sanchez was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and vehicular manslaughter and remains in jail.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges and a preliminary hearing for a trial has been scheduled for 13 September.
