Teenager rescued after getting stuck dangling from California's tallest bridge

A teenage daredevil has been saved after a failed stunt for social media left him dangling from California’s tallest bridge.

Dozens of emergency responders were called to rescue the 19-year-old who was suspended from a rope on the underside of Foresthill Bridge on Sunday.

The teenager was left hanging approximately 30ft from the underside of the catwalk after his equipment failed.

His friend, 17, was filming the rope swinging stunt from the catwalk and called the emergency services when they realised he was stuck.

A rescuer was lowered to help the teenager and successfully brought him back up to the catwalk. The rescue took approximately two hours.

The 19-year-old was checked by medics and did not sustain any visible injuries.

California Fire Battalion Chief Nolan Hale said that the boy found dangling from the bridge “was pretty shaken up,” even after he was saved by authorities.

“He was in that harness for probably an hour and fifteen before we could get him up and off,” he said.

Attempting any kind of stunt involving the Foresthill Bridge – the fourth highest bridge in the United States – is forbidden, said Mr Hale, noting that most incidents are recovery operations.

“Someone dangling 700ft above the American River is a high-risk operation with vertical rope rescue,” he told CBS.

According to Placer County Sheriff’s Office, both teenagers received citations for trespassing.

Authorities posted a reminder that it is illegal to trespass on the Foresthill Bridge.
