Two teenagers tragically lost their lives while swimming in a storm at Coney Island Beach in Brooklyn, New York, police have said.

The police were alerted and arrived at the beach boardwalk at Stillwell Avenue at around 8pm on Friday, as reported by WABC-TV.

Eyewitnesses informed the TV station a storm had started and most beachgoers sought shelter, however, two young women ventured into the sea.

Following a search operation, emergency services managed to pull the girls, aged 17 and 18, from the water at around 9.30pm.

They were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were later pronounced dead, as per WABC's report.

A man who tried to assist the teenagers was still missing as of Friday night, the station added.

The New York Police Department has yet to respond to a request for more information from The Associated Press.
