The list is topped by Lord Sugar, whose appearance at the helm of The Apprentice along with his business puts his fortune at a value of £1.15 billion.

Dragons’ Den star Peter Jones follows Lord Sugar (£475m), with Irish-born producer and actress Roma Downey in third (£375m), and X Factor creator Simon Cowell in fourth (£340m).

New Top Gear host, Chris Evans, has surpassed the former host Jeremy Clarkson to make the Top 50 for the first time with a fortune of £50m.

Ant & Dec (with a joint fortune of £45m), Kirsty Young (£43m), Jerry Springer (£40m, who qualifies as he was born in London) and London-born Lisa Vanderpump (£40m) are all new entries too.

Speaking about Chris, Robert Watts, compiler of the Rich List, said: “Chris Evans’s career has been a rollercoaster ride. He made a huge sum of money in his twenties, struggled in his thirties and lost a lot of his wealth. Now he is poised to march up the Rich List of wealthiest performers in the years to come.”

Talking about the list as a whole, he added: “Many of the people on the list give the impression of being fun-loving, easy-going performers but in fact there are shrewd commercial brains behind that.”
