Tenerife 'dead' as tourist films streets with 'not a soul in sight'
A holidaymaker has branded Tenerife as "dead", suggesting it's even quieter than Turkey, which has recently been described as "finished" due to soaring prices.
In recent weeks, there have been murmurs about Turkey losing its buzz because of steep costs. Now, similar whispers are emerging about Tenerife turning into a ghost town.
Hayley Duffy took to TikTok with videos showcasing deserted streets in Tenerife, claiming the popular destination is "dead". She compared the quietness to that of Turkey, stating that Tenerife seemed even more silent, reports the Express.
In her video, she expressed her bewilderment: "Everybody is saying how quiet Turkey is this summer but, honestly, what is going on with Tenerife? There's not a soul in sight."
"I don't know what's going on. I've been to both Turkey and Tenerife and, honestly, I would say that Tenerife is so much quieter."
Pondering the reasons for the lack of crowds, Hayley speculated in her video caption whether fewer people were travelling or if other factors were at play. Her visit at the end of August left her puzzled by the emptiness.
The video quickly garnered likes and sparked debate among social media users. Some suggested that high costs were deterring visitors, while others pointed out that August can be a quieter month for Tenerife compared to other destinations.
Opinions among holidaymakers varied, with some noting that Tenerife was bustling during their visits this year, whereas others attributed the quietness to the financial strain caused by the cost of living crisis. Hayley sparked a complex discussion with her observations, and while some agreed with her, others offered different perspectives. One individual commented: "It's too expensive now to go to Tenerife."
Another person added: "Kids back in school, plus going abroad is so expensive now. People can't afford it."
A third person responded: "Tenerife comes alive in the winter months. End of August is always cheaper to fly to the Med in summer."
Others provided additional insights, claiming they've seen Tenerife "packed" earlier in the summer, suggesting varied experiences. One person shared: "I'm here now - it's rammed."
Another stated: "Tenerife has had its busiest summer since pre-Covid this year. As a Tenerife business owner living in the UK, I know it's been manic."
Despite the quiet streets during her visit, Hayley acknowledged that Tenerife is "lovely" even when less crowded.
