In typical Christopher Nolan fashion, the director's latest movie is a near-mystery. Whether you're a fan or even a member of the Tenet cast, there's little chance you really know what's going on.

Unsurprisingly, then, Tenet has prompted a wave of fan theories – including one that suggests the upcoming thriller could in fact be a sequel to one of Nolan's previous titles, the mind- and land-bending Inception.

John David Washington, whose character is currently billed as 'the Protagonist', shared his thoughts on the idea that Tenet is actually a sneaky Inception follow-up, telling Esquire that the two films are related one way or another.

"I'd say it is an in-law to Inception," he said of Tenet. "They're related by marriage."

Joking that there is at least a connection between the two – no matter how tenuous – Washington added: "They get together for Thanksgivings, family barbecues, that kind of thing. Other than that, one lives in Europe and the other one lives in Compton."

We're not entirely sure we trust John, mind you. After all, he did recently admit that he had questions for Nolan "every day" during filming.

"Every day I had questions for him. But he was very gracious, and he answered them very calmly and patiently," he revealed. "It was important that the actors could track the story correctly, so we could tell it the best way we could, and he was very patient with us.

"I say that very politely."

Tenet is set to arrive in UK and US cinemas on July 17, 2020.
