‘Tenet’ Tops $200M Overseas Today With Solid Start In Japan – International Box Office

EXCLUSIVE: Christopher Nolan’s Tenet added a handful of markets this weekend after beginning overseas rollout in late August. While the domestic performance has been hampered by the coasts being largely closed, offshore markets have had a bit more leeway, and in some ways been robust even with capacity restrictions. This is yet another sign that offshore differs greatly from domestic amid the current situation: the Warner Bros thriller will cross $200M today at the international box office.

The China portion of that is an estimated $60M through Saturday in the movie’s third frame (Maoyan is predicting a finish at $67M with the market getting primed for a host of local National Day releases and as The Eight Hundred continues its breathless run, amassing $418M through Saturday). But most notably this weekend, Japan got its first look at the time-bending pic. We understand Tenet is poised for a $4M+ debut there. This is a three-day weekend count, versus the typical Saturday-Sunday local opening. It is important to recall that Japan is not a piracy market (that’s why a lot of movies open there later than elsewhere) and the country is heading into the Silver Week holiday. The re-issue of Nolan’s Interstellar has recently playing strongly there. Tenet also debuted in Mexico this frame.

Elsewhere, in Korea, Tenet is at nearly $12M through its fourth Saturday in a hobbled market. Mulan opened there this weekend with about $830K through Saturday. The two films have been jockeying for No. 1 in Korea this session.

We’ll have a full update on Sunday.
