Tennessee inmate beaten and restrained before death, surveillance footage shows

Newly-released surveillance footage shows prison officers officers beating and kneeling on the back of an inmate who later died at the Shelby County Criminal Justice Center in Tennessee on 5 October 2022.

Video shows Gershun Freeman, 33, attempting to run from a cell. Officers are then seen punching and hitting him.

Further footage shows officers kneeling on his back.

“Mr. Gershun Freeman suffered from psychosis and cardiovascular disease and died of a heart attack while being restrained. It is unfortunate that parts of the video are being shown out of context,” Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner Jr said.
