James Cameron wasn't kidding when he promised Terminator: Dark Fate would be a direct sequel to the classic Judgment Day.

The upcoming revamp of the franchise will obviously bring back Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800, along with the long-awaited return of Linda Hamilton as the ass-kicking Sarah Connor for the first time in 25 years.

As fans remember, Judgment Day revolved around the T-800 and Sarah Connor protecting humanity's future saviour John Connor – played in the 1992 movie by then-child actor Edward Furlong.

Digital Spy was in attendance for a Hall H panel at Comic-Con International, where Cameron announced via a livestream that Furlong will be reuniting Hamilton and Schwarzenegger in Dark Fate.

There were no other details about how Furlong will reprise his role as John Connor, or his part in the story. Young actor Jude Collie was previously cast to play the child version of John Connor.

It was also revealed during the panel by director Tim Miller that Dark Fate will have an R-rating in the US.

Dark Fate unleashes a war with a new model Terminator (Gabriel Luna) against the T-800 and Sarah Connor, after Skynet targets a cyborg known as Grace (Mackenzie Davis).

Linda Hamilton has been personally involved in shaping the script for Dark Fate, having recently complained about the various sequels released after Judgment Day.

"They're very forgettable, aren't they?" she reflected. "You start something and you're invested in the franchise, but somehow the characters that you care about weren't there. Too many people, too many story points.

"So I think we've done a good job of narrowing down the focus again so it will echo the first two films."

Terminator: Dark Fate comes to cinemas on October 23 in the UK and November 1 in the US.
